Nest Learning Thermostat

$330

As a rule, Backbone ignores thermostats, but I was pleased to break that rule for the Nest. It’s thoughtfully designed and attractive, and offers Wi-Fi connectivity, touch controls and a motion sensor. The Nest offers the feature common to all programmable thermostats: you set temperatures based on time and day. Turning down the heat when you’re in a cozy bed means you use less energy. But the Nest also learns from you. Its motion sensor tells it when you’re home and adjusts accordingly, and if you often turn down the AC in the afternoon, Nest learns that behaviour. This means over time, the Nest actually creates a more efficient program for itself. Companion iOS and Android apps allow you to monitor and control your home’s temperature from anywhere.

The Nest sells for $330 from Amazon.ca or can be purchased directly from Nest.com. Only a year of use will determine if the unit is worth that much in energy savings but the Nest is nice to look at and a pleasure to use.
