BCNET is a not-for-profit society formed to provide high-speed optical network capabilities-often called advanced networking-to British Columbia 's higher education and research institutions. Advanced networks are independent from the commercial Internet and support experimental and collaborative efforts in education and research being conducted across the province and around the world.
BCNET operates the province's first and only high-speed research and education network: the Optical Regional Advanced Network (ORAN). The ORAN 's dedicated bandwidth enables technological advancement and increases productivity and innovation for education and research activities. This network is a critical piece of the infrastructure that keeps British Columbia at the forefront of the international stage by linking provincial members to the nationwide and worldwide advanced Internet-supporting world-class projects in the areas of education, health, physics, the arts and science.
