AQUOS 1080p D82 Challenge Launches - Nationwide Environmental Challenge Encourages Canadians to Reduce Their Carbon Footprint
MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 11 /CNW/ - Sharp Electronics, the leading innovator in LCD technology, today announced the launch of the AQUOS 1080p D82 Challenge, a Canada-wide initiative encouraging all Canadians to take positive environmental action - and win some terrific prizes by doing so. Through the AQUOS 1080p D82 Challenge, people from every region of Canada will have the chance to become one of eighty participants in an innovative online contest designed to raise awareness of climate change issues and motivate Canadians to make a difference in their daily lives.
"We're proud of Sharp's environmentally-friendly approach to business," said Carmine Cinerari, Vice President, Consumer Products Division, Sharp Electronics of Canada. "Now we're hoping to encourage everyone to recognize the urgent need for change. We've built this Challenge around the idea of 10 Provinces, 80 People, with 82 Days to make a difference: 1080pD82.ca. The Challenge is named after one of our AQUOS TV models for good reason - we're going to reward the Canadian who makes the biggest personal change in their carbon footprint with a state-of-the-art 52" AQUOS LCD TV."
Canadians can enter online to participate in the Challenge at www.1080pD82.ca. The initial round of online recruitment for the Challenge will close on June 4, 2007, after which eighty participants will be selected by random draw from all entries received. Each of the 80 challengers will "weigh in" and evaluate their current environmental impact. The participants will then record actions taken every week to reduce their environmental burden, with their progress tracked and recorded online via their personal journals on the AQUOS 1080p D82 Challenge website.
When the Challenge closes 82 days later (on September 20, 2007), the participant who has done the most to reduce their environmental impact will win a 52" Sharp AQUOS LC52D82U LCD TV. Everyone wins by putting the Earth first, and all 80 participants will leave the Challenge as winners, with two 46" AQUOS TVs and a range of other prizes also up for grabs.
Sharp is committed to action on climate change. As a manufacturer, the company has an internal goal to achieve "zero global warming impact by 2010." Sharp already upholds stricter-than-average evaluation and authorization criteria to improve the environmental performance of its products. Sharp AQUOS TVs are manufactured in the company's "Super Green" Kameyama factory in Japan using environmentally-conscious processes. The company's latest integrated manufacturing facility, the Kameyama No.2 Plant, is a model of sustainable manufacturing.
- The Kameyama No.2 Plant generates approximately one-third of the electrical power used in-house, through the world's largest Solar Power Generation System (5,150 kW) combined with one of Japan's largest fuel-cell and cogeneration systems. - The use of these innovative power generation systems also helps to reduce the plant's CO2 emissions by 40% - 100% of manufacturing wastewater in the plant is recycled - By recycling and reusing components the plant produces zero landfill waste.
All AQUOS LCD TVs consume approximately 20% less power than a conventional CRT television and approximately 35% less energy than a plasma display. The circuit boards in the AQUOS are constructed with lead-free solder. Even the AQUOS television frame is made with a corn-based resin coating.
