Atlantic Canada Electronics Stewardship (ACES) Expands to Become Canada's Most Comprehensive Electronics Recycling Program | January 30, 2009
ACES program expands to accept wide array of audio-video and telecommunication products in Nova Scotia
TRURO, NS, Jan. 30 /CNW/ - Nova Scotia now has the broadest electronics recycling program in Canada, with an expanded list of more than 40 additional electronics products. The ACES program, which allows consumers and businesses to drop-off unwanted electronics free of charge, is expanding to recycle products such as home and vehicle stereos, VCRs, telephones, DVD and MP3 players.
Effective February 1, 2009, the ACES program, which has already recycled more than 2000 metric tonnes of unwanted TV's, computers and desktop printers, will expand to include these broad product categories:
- Personal or Portable Audio/Video Playback Systems
- Vehicle Audio Systems (Aftermarket)
- Home Audio/Video Systems
- Home Theatre in a Box (HTB) Systems
- Non-Cellular Telephones
This expansion coincides with the first anniversary of the program and the opening of its 33 ACES Drop-off Centres throughout Nova Scotia. "The successful first year of the ACES Program demonstrates Nova Scotia's commitment to responsible recycling practices for electronics," says ACES Board Chair, Sean DeVries of Panasonic. "The inclusion of these additional products will help build on this momentum and divert even more electronics from Nova Scotia's landfills."
The ACES Program was created by the electronics and retail industries to manage the recycling of electronic products regulated by the Government of Nova Scotia and banned from municipal landfills. Under a two-stage process, provincial legislation regulated additional products starting February 1, 2009.
"Nova Scotia is pleased to have the most extensive electronics waste recycling programs in Canada, said David Morse, Minister of Environment. "I want to congratulate Canada's electronic industry for their commitment toward environmental stewardship and for their continued support in helping Nova Scotia be one of the cleanest and most sustainable environments in the world." At the end of 2008, the ACES Program had collected more than 2000 metric tonnes of electronics for recycling. That is the equivalent of loading a 53 foot tractor trailer 200 times with regulated electronic products. "ACES is committed to responsible recycling and preventing the illegal export of electronics to developing nations by following the standards set by the Recycling Vendor Qualification Standard Program. By combining ACES' commitment with Nova Scotia's enthusiasm for recycling, we have a formula for environmental success," says DeVries.
Environmental Handing Fees
Environmental Handling Fees (EHFs) for the expanded list of electronics products have been established. These fees will be charged on the purchase of all new products effective February 1, 2009 and are formulated to reflect the true cost of collection, transportation and responsible recycling.
