| African countries jump on .travel 'net domain |
December 12, 2006 |
If you haven't heard of .travel yet, you may the next time you are planning a vacation or business trip. The new Internet domain was designed to make it easier to find location-based travel information, with an eye towards increasing tourism. And it's a benefit the nations of Africa are pursuing. The Africa Virtual Heritage Management Project (VHMP) is working to ensure the registration of each country’s place names, including cities, towns, heritage and sacred sites, and national parks and reserves. In total, approximately 4,000 primary place names, from all 55 African nations, will be registered and held in trust by the United Nations World Tourism Organization for up to five years. At any time, each African nation will be able to request the transfer of respective place names to the rightful authorities within their country. All .travel place names must be registered by Dec. 31, 2006. After that, unclaimed place names in any country will be open to commercial travel entities. The Egyptian travel portal www.egypt.travel served as the template and catalyst for the rest of Africa. “By utilizing .travel as a marketing tool, we are able to communicate to the global traveling consumer that this domain is the source of all Egypt-related online travel information, and we are already seeing the benefits,” said Ahmed El-Khadem, chairman of the Egyptian Tourist Authority. “Since its introduction in March 2006, www.egypt.travel has received nearly two million unique visitors, a significantly larger number than we have ever seen before.”
