Canadians can now ditch their cell carriers and take their phone numbers with them, but most respondents to a recent survey plan to stay with their current providers for the foreseeable future.
The poll, conducted by TNS Canadian Facts, found only 19 per cent of those with a cellphone contract probably or definitely will switch providers soon. Pay-as-you-go users are even more likely to stick around, with only 13 per cent looking to jump ship.
The longer-term picture is more volatile, however, as users expect the introduction of number portability will make it more likely they will switch at some point in the future. “Consumers are now free to contemplate offers from other companies, even if they are satisfied with their current provider, and they expect these offers to come,” said Richard Jenkins, vice-president of TNS Canadian Facts.
“A lot now depends on which players effectively embrace number portability and are successful at winning the hearts and minds of consumers in this new competitive environment.”
Mobile data and voice are great, as long as the signal is strong. And while mobile networks are pretty good these days, road warriors quickly discover that dead zones still exist.
