The majority of Canadians, almost 80 per cent, support the use of products and processes that involve biotechnology and generally feel good about biotech, according to a survey from BIO-TECanada, the industry's national association. But more than one-third do not regard Canada as a biotechnology leader, or even believe we're able to keep pace with the rest of the world. "Canadians see the benefits biotechnology offers in agriculture, health and the environment. However, our industry is not regarded by Canadians as a world leader," said Peter Brenders, BIOTECanada president and CEO. The poll aslo indicated, according to the organization, that Canadians want the federal government to get active on biotech. More than 80 percent of Canadians agree the federal government should find ways to help Canadian biotechnology companies develop new products, and almost 90 per cent say Canada's healthcare system should be willing to pay more for advances in new health biotechnologies.
