Portable DVD players have been on the market for a few years, but this is the first slate style (non flip-top) to cross our desk. The NextBase is surprisingly small, because the movie disc slots in behind the LCD screen. Even with a seven-inch screen (measured diagonally) the unit only spans six
inches across.

The NextBase comes with a remote, a car power adapter and a nifty bag that hangs over the back of a front seat and turns the unit into an in-car movie and music player. The unit listed for $458.88 at press time from Merconnet. An add-on rechargeable battery is available for $83.42.
