Athabasca University March 5, 2002
New Schooling Supplement: Online Education

Speed, teamwork and a global perspective are crucial in today’s lightning-fast business world. At Athabasca University, these same qualities apply to its Executive MBA (EMBA) program, enabling students to learn interactively and enhance their careers.

Established in 1994, Athabasca’s program was the world’s first online EMBA. Now, it’s the largest Executive MBA program in Canada, with enrolment surging from 130 students in 1995 to more than 1,100 students currently. The program has captured 25 per cent of the national MBA market and 15 per cent of the world online market, with students logging on across Canada and in 23 other countries.

In addition, Athabasca’s EMBA program was recently ranked among the top three EMBA programs in the country by Canadian Business Magazine. “Athabasca has taken the teaching of managers by storm,” says Dr. Peter Carr, director of the Centre for Innovative Management, which manages the university’s graduate management programs. “It has revolutionized the MBA world.”

Now that Athabasca has established itself as a leader in online education, Carr has a broader vision. “It’s not sufficient to just provide teaching,” he says. “As a university, it’s critical that you have effective research projects and strong relationships with the community that you serve.”

For example, Athabasca is involved in a $3.5-million research project with SAP and IBM focusing on supply chain management processes. As Carr explains, the same technologies that allow Athabasca’s students to learn are now being applied to business projects – just one more example of the university’s innovative and collaborative
approach.
