Where to Enroll in e-Business U. January 1, 2001

By Clay Braziller

Surprisingly, despite the demand for employees skilled in e-business, few universities have added e-business to their curriculum. The ones that have are offering a wide range of programs.
Some programs turn out technologists while others focus on creating business managers. Prices range from $1,400 for the Lansbridge-CATM program to $39,000 for the Dalhousie-ITI program.
Following are some of the institutions which have added e-business to their curriculum.

University of British Columbia (Vancouver, B.C.)
UBC is the first and only university in Canada offering a full suite of Internet programs. These include marketing, e-business, publishing and security. Their Certificate of Internet Marketing program is designed for marketing professionals. This program explores how to use the Internet to expand current marketing communications, manage online transactions and provide new forms of customer value.

Simon Fraser University (Vancouver, B.C.)
Simon Fraser University, not to be outdone by cross-town rival UBC, recently launched its own e-business program. This intensive 16-week program focuses on how to develop an e-business strategy within a corporation. Students are taught how to bridge the gap between the technician and the professional businessperson.

Ryerson Polytechnic University (Toronto, Ont.)
Ryerson launched a part-time Certificate in e-business last fall, and is launching a full-time version in January 2001. The program focuses on the technical aspects of developing an e-business, and provides the skills needed to become a certified Web designer.

McMaster University (Hamilton, Ont.)
McMaster claims to be the first university in Ontario to grant a degree by offering an MBA stream in electronic commerce. The majority of the course is dedicated to the technical aspects surrounding e-business. The full-time program requires a strong technical background and applicants are screened by both the MBA and IS faculty.

Dalhousie University (Halifax, N.S.) and ITI
Dalhousie University and ITI (Information Technology Institute) have joined forces to create an MBA in Applied Information Technology. It is offered at all ITI locations across Canada with the Dalhousie portion available via distance education over the Internet.

Humber College (Toronto, Ont.) and Microsoft
Humber College has teamed up with Microsoft Canada to offer the College of E. The program, which is the only Microsoft-certified program in Canada, offers certificate-like courses in Internet Management and Web Design, Web Site Administration, Internet Software Development and Supply Chain Management Internet Marketing.

Lansbridge University (Internet)
This online university owned by Learnsoft Corporation of Fredricton NB offers the Certified Advanced Technology Manager (CATM) program. First started in 1996, the program is a set of graduate-level management development courses that provide solutions to complex issues that challenge technology companies.

Royal Roads University (Victoria, B.C.)
Royal Roads is the only Canadian university offering a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree in e-business. The B.Com e-business program places a strong emphasis on e-business in such subjects as marketing, managing information systems and entrepreneurial decision-making. The two-year program is offered primarily via Internet-based distance learning, with a two-week on-campus residency at the start of each year.

University of Western Ontario (London, Ont.)
The Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario is now offering short courses on various aspects of e-business in its HBA, MBA, Executive MBA and Executive Development programs.
Ivey's 2-day Winning Strategies for eBusiness program is offered three times a year in Toronto.
