Ontarians like ban on cellphones while driving   |  November 24, 2009

Well, except those who plan to ignore the law

By Peter Wolchak

Eight per cent of Ontario drivers intend to ignore the recently passed legislation banning the use of hand-held devices while driving, according to an Angus Reid poll. However, 90 per cent are in favour of the legislation and look down on those scofflaws.

And to the joy of accessory manufacturers such as poll sponsor Sony Ericsson, 29 per cent of Ontarians plan to acquire technologies compliant with the legislation, including car speaker phones and wired and wireless headsets.

More than one in five Ontarians currently own at least one form of compliant technology: nine per cent have speaker phones, 20 per cent wireless headsets and 20 per cent wired headsets.

And just to confirm most people’s suspicions about younger drivers, compliance plans are lowest amongst those aged 18 to 34, with 14 per cent saying they will likely continue to use hand-held communication devices regardless of the law.

See this issue’s Tek Gadgets section for more on devices that will keep you on the right side of the law.
