Review and tune up your social media presence | November 24, 2009
What are Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube saying about you?
By Peter Wolchak
Social media is often where we make our first impressions, according to Canadian Randall Craig, author of Personal Balance Sheet. He advises that people take the time to tune up their online presence. His advice:
Remove risky content: It’s surprisingly easy for inappropriate photos or questionable comments to appear online, especially as they may be posted by others. Review your sites and attempt to delete anything that represents you in a poor light.
Update yourself: Nothing says “stale” like personal and professional information that is not current.
Connect the dots: Cross-linking between social media sites will increase traffic from search engines and help people discover more about you.
Add connections: Most people have a pile of business cards on their desks. Review those cards for potential online connections.
Ask for recommendations: Make a list of all of your big wins during the last 12 months and ask those people to give you a recommendation on LinkedIn or Plaxo. And do the same for those who did a great job for you.
