Interac chip card sees test deployment November 8, 2007
In September the Interac Association announced the completion of Canada’s first debit card transaction using chip technology at a point-of-sale terminal. The transaction was processed by TD Merchant Services using a BMO Bank of Montreal chip debit card at Mercato Giovanni’s Fresh Food in Toronto. This demonstration transaction leads into a Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont., market trial of chip technology this fall.

Chip technology is said to provide increased protection against debit and credit card fraud. Merchants and cardholders will start to see chips appear in cards, bank machines and POS terminals in 2008.
