Video conferencing is a great option as companies move to cut costs and be more environmentally responsible. But it’s a new process for many and the rules of video etiquette are not necessarily well understood.

For proof, check out this YouTube video, a young woman seems to forget that businesses use video during a call specifically so the participants can actually see each other. To help others avoid committing career-limiting moves on camera, ooVoo asked etiquette experts Beverly Hills Manners to compile a list of tips.

1. Assign a facilitator to manage over-exuberant participants.

2. Ask permission to record a video chat. Privacy is expected until consent is given.

3. Pay attention and listen; if you try to fake it, you’ll be caught.

4. Watch your body language: avoid personal gestures such as hair playing, scratching, picking, etc.

5. Don’t eat or drink during a business video conference call.

6. Dress properly, as you would for any business meeting. Avoid bright colours, which are particularly distracting on video.

And a P.S. for number 6: pants are still optional for a video call from a home office, as long as you don’t stand up.
