Nintendo blowing past gaming competitors July 10, 2008
Wii knocks Xbox to second place

By Peter Wolchak

The NPD Group dished out two helpings of good news to Nintendo Canada in April: the Nintendo Wii is the most popular next-generation gaming console in Canada, and the Nintendo DS held the top spot in overall game system sales for 2006 and 2007.

According to The NPD Group, total life-to-date sales of the Wii console in Canada have surpassed the previous home console system leader, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, with lifetime sales of 813,000 units. This is especially noteworthy as the 360 has been on the market about a year longer than the Wii.

“Since launch, the Wii console has consistently been a top seller in the Canadian market,” said Darrel Ryce, director for The NPD Group. “Seventeen months after the launch of the system it still remains one of the hottest items at retail, selling out almost as quickly as it hits retail shelves.”

Other NPD figures:

> Nintendo’s Wii Play has outsold all other titles since the Wii’s 2006 launch, while Super Mario Galaxy landed in the number three position across all platforms

> Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold nearly 200,000 units in March 2008 alone, and is the best-selling title of 2008 so far

> the Nintendo DS actually outsold the Wii and is the number one video game system (of any type) in Canada based on 2006 and 2007 numbers
