Dell does well in slumping PC market November 9, 2003
Dell Canada is continuing its strong PC shipment record, even as the overall Canadian market continues to slump. IDC’s Canadian Quarterly PC Tracker found PC shipments dropped 1.5 per cent to 678,000 units from the same period a year ago. Shipments of commercial-branded PCs were down 5.3 per cent, whereas consumer-branded PCs registered 6.0 per cent growth from the previous year.

Dell continued to lead the Canadian PC market as the only vendor to register positive year-over-year growth for the quarter, increasing its sales 2.2 per cent from a year ago and gaining 3.3 points in share. Dell led the total desktop market with 21.5 per cent share and for the first time stole top spot in the tightly-contested notebook market with 22.6 per cent share.

HP recorded solid year-on-year growth in notebooks, outperforming the market by 10 points. However, its overall performance saw a 32.7 per cent decline in commercial-branded desktops.

IBM increase its share of commercial-branded desktops by 1.5 points, and Apple regained the fourth position in the quarter on strong sales of its PowerBooks. The company’s commercial-branded notebooks posted an impressive year-over-year growth rate of 86.7 per cent. iBook consumer-branded sales also registered solid growth of 13.8 per cent. Desktops on the other hand fell 22.7 per cent from a year ago.
