| A Correction, And Some Thrifty Advice |
September 2, 2004 |
By Wayne Kozun, Toronto
In your “Tech in 10” story (Backbone, July/August 2004) your timeline states that the iPod MP3 player was introduced in 2003. The iPod was actually introduced in the fall of 2001. You were off by two years, which is several generations in techland as Apple has now introduced the fourth-generation iPod. If you can’t get the past right then how can we trust your forecasts for the future? Also, on page 42 you show the IBM 4GB Compact Flash Microdrive that sells for $674. This can be obtained much more cheaply by buying an iPod mini for US$250 (about C$330) and ripping out the hard drive, which is a 4GB Hitachi Compact Flash drive. Note that IBM sold its hard drive division to Hitachi in 2003 so the Hitachi/IBM drives are exactly the same.
