Officer, it was my mom on the phone

Even as adults we still blame our moms when we screw up, as proved by number five on the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia’s list of common justifications people pull out when caught breaking hands-free driving laws.
- It was an urgent work call!
- But I was stopped at a red light. (The rules apply even when at a red light.)
- I was just checking my voicemail. I didn’t make a call. (Voicemail is still an infraction.)
- Driver: But I have it on hands-free! Police officer: It’s not hands-free if it’s in your hand.
- But it was my mom calling!
- I didn’t know, I’m not from here.
- I drive better than most people, not like the ones that eat while driving.
- I was just setting up my hands-free device.
- But it’s my first time. Can’t I just get a warning?
- It was my wife calling and I don’t dare ignore her.
