I finally was able to get all the PCs I use on a regular basis moved over to Windows 7. Personally, I tried to make the move as soon as I could but had a few straggler environments. I have talked with a number of folks though who are still on the fence on when it should happen for their organizations.
HP put together a viewpoint paper on Assessing the Environment before moving to Windows 7 that may help out. The Everest Group interviewed the folks who put together the viewpoint paper too.
Moving to a new OS is not an overnight process; many factors play into the planning and migration of an organization's desktops. Whether the move to Windows 7 is now or later, the investment in careful and comprehensive planning is critical to success. It is the applications that deliver the value, but the hardware has to be ready for the move as well.
Microsoft also has migration guides available and provided state migration tools to help out moving from XP to Windows 7.
