Both the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games are world-class sporting events. They both have tremendous athletes who are amazing competitors and, while different, the two events share a lot of commonalities; especially when it comes to the information technology (IT) that helps run the Games.

In fact, our Chief Integrator for the 2010 Winter Games, Magnus Alvarsson, says that in terms of technology; “the Paralympics are more like the Olympics every year.”

To explain a few of the similarities and differences, we’ve asked Magnus for some insight into the competition venues, people and IT used.

Competition venues
• There are four competition venues involved in the Paralympics versus nine in the Olympics
• There are five sports in the Paralympics versus 15 in the Olympics

People
• Atos Origin staff and volunteers work from 7am to midnight during the Paralympics versus 24-hours during the Olympics
• 80% of staff is working at the Technical Operations Centre for the Paralympics versus a full staff for the Olympics
• The number of staff at the competition venues in use is exactly the same during the Paralympics and Olympics

Technology
• The scope of technology used in the Paralympics is smaller in scale; however, identical technology is applied to both Games
• The INFO system in the Paralympics is slightly different because it uses exclusively web-based coding; no other formats, such as pdf documents, are mixed into the system
• The Olympic Print Distribution system, which delivers print-outs of results, is being used in the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games for the first time
