Keeping Emulation Environments Portable  |  February 24, 2009

One of the problems with the march of technology is that many of the hardware and software platforms once deemed useful are left behind. We can no longer access the information they contained. The EU has the KEEP project to keep software running in emulation. There is a focus on games, but includes other formats as well. The goal of the project is to "facilitate universal access to our cultural heritage by developing flexible tools for accessing and storing a wide range of digital objects".

It's not cheap though, since the cost of the project is: 4.02 million Euros. Console emulation does have a deep culture of projects.

Businesses have used hardware emulation for years (e.g., PDP 8) as well, and it's interesting how it's becoming more important in our personal lives as well. At least we've got the computational power to emulate effectively. Maybe there will be whole device emulations in the cloud that we can tap into as well.
